Plodding

Woke up at 5am, stretched for 10 minutes and ran the short loop. Kept an 8.5 pace and it still hurt. I’ll be stoked when I can run double the distance at the same pace!

Slow

I intended to run today, but didn’t. My legs are pretty sore from yesterday and, I assume, from all the stretching I’ve been doing. The last thing I want to do is overdo it and get shinsplints or something. I’ll stretch today and run tomorrow.

First day

Ran the quick loop this morning. 1.5 miles never felt so long. I’m going to work on intensity while running, so I tried to keep my pace as quick as I could. Last I remembered, my pace on longer runs was a miserable 9, so that’s what I was aiming to fall below. Today came in at 8.5. And it hurt, which is a testament to my current state of un-fitness. The last few blocks felt like I was running in slow motion, but I couldn’t make my legs move any quicker!

Magness Tree Farm loop

Went up for a hike this morning at Magness Tree Farm. Short hike, but I had Asher on my back while Amy kept an eye on Truman and his friend Abby.

I stretched for 10 minutes this morning, doing the “synergy fitness” stretching routine. I intend to do this routine twice a day (morning and night), regardless of whether I run.

I’m going to try to put all “significant” running/hiking activity in here, so here’s the first real entry.

Weigh in

Tomorrow is Sunday. The start of a week. The start of April. And the start of my fitness “do over.” I need goals, but in order to know where I want to go, I need to know where I am. So here’s the weigh-in.

I’d like to get my weight to 225 and my bodyfat to 20%. Seems achievable. I’d like to do this by the end of June, 2007. That’s a full three months. Three months to run off 14 lbs and 6% bodyfat. I can do this. Just watch those charts over there.

Resurrection

Whoa, a month of no posts, then BAM! Two in one day!

In honor of Spring, I’m resurrecting the old JogLog. I’ve upgraded the blog software and got it humming along nicely. The graphs will look better after tomorrow’s data points. Basically, I’m going to be a fatblogger for a while. After shooting some video and watching my meatbeard swing with every word I uttered, I decided I really need to start running again. That and the hope that running will eliminate my new-in-2006 high blood pressure medication. I’m not holding my breath on that last one, though. I’ve got genetics working against me. We’ll see how it goes.

If When I make it to the end of the first month (April), I’m going to reward myself with some new running shoes.

Super boring

I know it’s been super boring over here lately. This last week I stayed home to join Amy and the boys on spring break. We went to the beach for a night, then puttered around the house most of the week. It was nice and relaxing. Still need to grade some papers and finish the taxes, though.

Yesterday a reporter from the local newspaper interviewed me about Yamhill.TV. That was fun. They got some shots of me interviewing a local gallery owner. I think the article will run next Wednesday and I’m hoping it’ll help drive a little bit of traffic, as well as lend a bit of legitimacy to the project. I spend a lot of time explaining what I’m doing with the site, and it’d be nice to start to get a greater level of awareness around local online media.

Katie and Casey Kulla of Oakhill Organics, part 1

I got to hang out with Casey and Katie Kulla of Oakhill Organics out in Grand Island (I’d never been to Grand Island before!). They’ve got a great CSA farm (community supported agriculture) on the island, and they’re gearing up for their second year in business. Casey and Katie sell their produce at the McMinnville Farmer’s Market. In this clip they talk about the CSA concept and some of their plans for the farm. More to come!
